A Nanaimo Wedding Photographer’s Experience on Newcastle Island the Night of a Storm
This was a lovely little adventure day. The weather had been great all summer long, it seemed, and this day was still a sunny one. If you’re looking for a Nanaimo Wedding Photographer for your own wedding, check out this cute story captured by (Bloom-in-essence) Bluminessence Photography – that ended in a thunderstorm.
We took a boat from Nanaimo’s downtown harbor to a little island visible from shore called Newcastle Island. When traveling from Vancouver on BC Ferries, you can see this island on your way to Departure Bay. From there, you head to Nanaimo’s waterfront. When arriving on Newcastle Island, everything is by foot, except that the staff have side-by-sides, which the bride got a joy ride in to her ceremony in.
It’s only a couple of minutes’ walk to the reception hall and about a 10-minute walk to a beautiful ceremony spot overlooking the ocean. The shorelines are a stunning place for couples’ portraits. After the ceremony, we headed to the reception hall to enjoy the rest of the evening.

All good things come to an end, and it was time to close down the hall and set up the tent. The forecast did call for rain and a storm, but it was 10 pm and all looked well. We set up our tents and nestled in to soon find out, oh yes, the storm is coming. It got SO windy and started raining. Not only was there thunder and lightning pretty much all night long… My eyes were closed, and I could still see the flashes. At one point, there was the most bizarre noise that came from being under the storm in nature, which sounded like aliens and robots in the sky. No joke i’ll never forget the noise. It kinda sounded like when you’re playing pinball and it goes in the underground thing for a while and sounds an alarm.

Even though we didn’t get much sleep, it was an adventure and one to remember. I’d definitely go back to walk the trail networks around the Island. I would LOVE to photograph another wedding in Nanaimo at Newcastle Island. It was so lovely. I highly recommend it as a Nanaimo wedding venue choice.
