Hey, It's Karysa! Your outdoor guide & photographer based in Port Alberni on Vancouver Island.
The decision to propose to your partner is a momentous one, and capturing that beautiful moment with a surprise engagement photography session makes it even more special. If you’re wondering how to plan a proposal, you’re in the right place.
Planning a surprise proposal with a photographer lets you relive it over and over again, without giving anything away in the moment. If you’re dreaming up the perfect way to ask that question and want it captured naturally, here’s how to plan it — and a real story from a recent beach proposal in Tofino that reminded me how unpredictable and beautiful life can be.

Start with a place that already feels comfortable and meaningful… somewhere your partner wouldn’t think twice about visiting.
That could be a favorite beach, a forest trail you love, or a quiet lookout where you’ve shared a few long talks.
Familiar places help keep nerves low and make the moment feel genuine.
If you’re planning your proposal on Vancouver Island, the options are endless. Many date ideas can naturally end in a proposal.
You don’t have to have it all figured out yet. Some photographers offer planning assistance because it can feel overwhelming to narrow down what to do. Reach out to your photographer early to get some great tips and advice.
We’ll help you plan the best locations, timing, and lighting that suits you as a couple, and we’ll figure out the logistics of staying hidden (which can get creative).
For one Tofino proposal I photographed, the groom-to-be hired a local planning company (Pacific Rim Event Planning) that planned the whole experience. They hired to set up a beach picnic by LuxFino: cozy blankets and a charcuterie board. I hid in the trees, camera ready, pretending to be part of the landscape.
I bolted from the trees after he knelt… heart pounding, sand flying, and while photographing, just as she covered her face in disbelief. That kind of emotion — the shock, the laughter, the “oh my god this is really happening,” you can’t relive it.
Once the question’s been asked and the tears are wiped away, take a few minutes for photos while everything still feels electric.
We’ll wander around the surrounding areas, get those just-engaged shots while you’re still caught up in it all.
After that, let yourselves breathe. Sit down, pour a drink, eat the snacks, and just take it in.
Those quiet moments right after — when everything slows down — are some of my favorite images to capture.
That same Tofino proposal had one tiny twist: a tsunami warning an hour before it happened.
The planners and I were checking updates nonstop, wondering if we’d need to move the setup to higher ground. Thankfully, it passed before they arrived. The waves were calm, the air still, and the sky gave us the most perfect post-storm glow.
It was a good reminder that not everything goes according to plan — but sometimes, that’s what makes the story unforgettable.
Proposal Location: Look for a secluded stretch of beach to ensure privacy. Consider proposing at the water’s edge with the waves gently washing ashore.
Props: Scatter seashells or rose petals in a heart shape in the sand. Place an archway with flowers and items from the sea. Light a long candle path to the spot of proposal. You can also bring along a cozy beach blanket and a picnic basket for a more cozy touch.
Photographer Assistance: Hire a photographer who knows the beach well and can time the proposal perfectly with the golden hues of a sunset or sunrise. It’s also important that your photographer has awareness of the tides because it’s possible the spot could be at high tide, not leaving much room on the beach. Consult with a photographer who will also provide creative ideas.
Tip: Consider the outfits you’d be wearing. How can you keep it a surprise? Maybe your “going to a beach wedding.”
Proposal Location: Research nearby trails or lookout points. Plan the proposal at a spot with a panoramic view. You could even hire a helicopter ride for a remote location.
Props: Bring a rustic wooden sign with a heartfelt message. A bottle of champagne always makes for some fun smiles.
Photographer Assistance: Choose a photographer experienced in outdoor shoots who can navigate the terrain and capture the grandeur of the mountains.
Proposal Location: Explore the garden in advance to find a quiet, picturesque corner. Arboretums and blooming flowerbeds are perfect.
Props: A trail of rose petals leading to a charming gazebo or a beautiful flower arch as the backdrop for the proposal.
Photographer Assistance: Collaborate with a photographer who specializes in capturing natural beauty and can suggest the best garden spots for your surprise engagement.
Proposal Location: Choose a lakeside spot with minimal foot traffic. Opt for a location with a beautiful view of the lake.
Props: A rowboat with a bouquet of flowers or floating candles can add a touch of romance. Create a heart shape with stones on the shore.
Photographer Assistance: Find a photographer who is familiar with the lake’s lighting conditions to capture the reflection of the water and the magic of the moment.
Proposal Location: Iconic city landmarks or rooftop bars provide a romantic urban setting.
Props: Create a custom neon sign with your proposal message, or use city lights as a backdrop for your special moment.
Photographer Assistance: Seek a photographer with experience in urban settings who can frame the cityscape beautifully in your engagement photos.

Proposal Location: Scout for a serene clearing or a moss-covered glen deep within the forest.
Props: Fairy lights hung from the trees or a trail of glowing lanterns leading to the proposal spot can enhance the magical atmosphere.
Photographer Assistance: Collaborate with a photographer who can capture the play of light and shadows in the forest for a whimsical touch.

Proposal Location: Plan your proposal amid the blossoming roses, choosing a well-maintained rose garden.
Props: A vintage wooden bench or a floral arch adorned with fairy lights adds to the romantic ambiance.
Photographer Assistance: Find a photographer who specializes in capturing the vibrant colors of flowers and can recommend the best time for your garden proposal.
Proposal Location: Choose a scenic park or meadow with a view, and set up a cozy picnic for two.
Props: Pack your partner’s favorite snacks, a blanket, and a personalized photo album to reminisce about your journey together.
Photographer Assistance: Work with a photographer who can blend candid moments with posed shots to capture the essence of your intimate picnic proposal.
